Shinning Through Cloud——Special Exhibition in Commemoration of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Mr. Gu Gongshuo

FOREWORD

“The flowers that bloomed and flourished in the spring have faded to dust, and summer has come with the singing of the cuckoo.” In Yiyuan Garden, adjacent to Leqiao Bridge, the once resplendent spring blooms have now quietly yielded to time, leaving behind a serene dusting. Standing tall for three centuries, the ancient ginkgo tree adorns the landscape with its verdant canopy, a silent witness from the Facing Wall Pavilion, narrating the passage of ages. Amidst the rockery, though the wisteria’s blooms have faded, its verdant foliage exudes vitality. Along the Lotus Fragrance Pavilion, a gentle breeze stirs the lotus leaves, while sunlight dances upon the shimmering pond, casting a tranquil glow.

This scenic garden is now a delightful destination for us to appreciate. In days gone by, esteemed literati like Wu Yun, Li Hongyi, Pan Zunqi, Wu Dacheng, Lu Hui, Gu Yun, Wu Changshuo, and others lingered on this beautiful place, finding inspiration for their literary works. Yiyuan Garden had covered with the footprints of four generations of the Gu family and had witnessed the rise and fall of the Gu family for a hundred years.

In modern times, the Gu family has gained renown for their extensive collection of artworks, particularly in the southern region of the Yangtze River. At the end of the Yuan and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, Gu family moved back to Suzhou from Huizhou, and became rich through business. It was until Gu Wenbin, one of the descendants, entered the civil service by the imperial examination, the Gu family gradually became a cultural family. Their passion for collecting began from the reigns of Jiaqing to Daoguang of Qing Dynasty, and continued through subsequent reigns of emperors of Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. Through the concerted efforts of four generations, notably Gu Wenbin, Gu Tingxi, Gu Cheng, Gu Linshi, Gu Gongxiong, and Gu Gongshuo, the Gu family’s reputation as collectors spread widely across the Yangtze River region, extending its influence even to Japan.

Gu Gongshuo (1904-1966), also known as Zehuan, was the youngest son of Gu Linshi and a fourth-generation descendant of Gu family. Since his childhood, he was deeply influenced by his family’s studies and got a glimpse of calligraphy and painting, not only appreciating the fineness of calligraphy and painting, but also good at painting, and he once wrote a long article titled Inscriptions of Ancient and Modern Paintings. During the 1920s and 1930s, Gu Gongshuo ventured into photography, capturing numerous precious images of Suzhou’s landscapes, urban scenes, rural life, and social customs. His dedication to innovation extended beyond the realm of art, as he founded the Langhua Tour Group with a mission focused on “enjoyment, enrichment, enlightenment, and health”, a venture that thrived for over a decade.

Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, Gu Gongshuo dedicated himself to the cultural preservation and promotion of Suzhou. Serving diligently and conscientiously, he assumed roles such as deputy director of the Suzhou Museum and director of the Suzhou Institute of Arts and Crafts. During this time, he authored works like Suzhou New Year Woodblock Prints and Mahoraga, and spearheaded systematic research into Suzhou’s Taohuawu New Year Woodblock Prints and clay sculptures. Gu Gongshuo’s efforts extended to reviving traditional arts, including Suzhou embroidery, through the establishment of an embroidery group aimed at revitalizing ancient techniques and showcasing the brilliance of Suzhou’s embroidery tradition. Additionally, he curated a series of exhibitions to showcase Suzhou’s artistic treasures and actively engaged with various parties to procure cultural relics for the Suzhou Museum.

One of Gu Gongshuo’s most admirable qualities is his selflessness. On one occasion, he rallied his family to donate Yiyuan Garden to the government, ensuring that its scenic beauty could be enjoyed by the public. Additionally, on the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, when preparations were underway for the construction of the Suzhou Museum, Gu Gongshuo made a significant contribution by donating the family’s prized possessions: Wang Meng’s Bamboo and Stone Painting and Zhu Yunming’s Xingning County Chronicles During the Zhengde Period of the Ming Dynasty. This act of turning private treasures into public assets exemplifies his dedication to the greater good and deserves utmost respect.
