Befriending Predecessors: Paintings of Mountains and Water in the Style of Antiquity from the Ming and the Qing Dynasties Collected by Suzhou Museum

序言

Foreword

“There are two ways of learning how to draw mountains and water. The first way is to learn from the nature and the second from predecessors who drew them in the past.” In addition, Dong Qichang said that, “Painters regard the old masters as their teachers. And then the nature is seen as their teacher as well. ”

During the Ming and the Qing dynasties, the paintings of mountains and water developed in terms of techniques and aesthetics. Learning from the old masters or drawing paintings in the style of antiquity was not just copying artworks but actually embracing a fresh and new conception. Gu Linshi, a collector from Suzhou once said that, “Purely copying others’ work is not complete compared to drawing paintings in the style of antiquity. Copying a painting is just copying its form and appearance. Yet drawing a painting in the style of antiquity will allow us to capture its spirit.” In reality, a great number of paintings in the style of antiquity appeared. The representatives are Dong Qichang and four artists who received the influence of Dong Qichang, namely Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, Wang Hui, Wang Yuanqi.

This exhibition selects forty paintings drawn by Dong Qichang as well as other artists in the style of antiquity from Ming and Qing dynasties to modern times. These paintings are in the form of hand scroll, album and hanging scroll, and in the style of ink, light crimson and blueish green, from which we can get a glimpse of the change in terms of the style and the taste regarding paintings of mountains and water.
