序言

Preface

Sea, is vast and endless, where hundreds of rivers enter in; jade, is clear and warm, which condenses the essence of the mountains.

With the opening of the port of Shanghai in modern times, jade carvers from all over the world gathered here, absorbing and integrating new ideas. As a result, the Shanghai Jade Carving came into being, with its delicate carving and unique charm, once it came out, it won numerous praise, and became a rising star among the four major jade carvings in China. With its spirit of openness and tolerance, the Shanghai Jade Carving has given artists a wide world, contributing to the cultural exchanges and collisions of different cultures, and cultivating a number of jade carving masters with distinctive artistic styles, of which Mr Wu Zaofa is a representative figure.

Wu Zaofa grew up in the landscape of Wuyuan, deeply influenced by Huizhou culture. Thirty years ago, he left his hometown and went to Shanghai to study under Mr Lang Lijun to learn vase jade carving. For ten years, he was dedicated and diligent. But since his childhood, he has been close to all living things and always played in the countryside. He loves the beauty of nature, and the birdsong and flowers of his hometown have left a lingering attachment in his heart. So, after ten years of studying jade carving, he decided to follow his heart and specialized in the creation of natural bird and flower themes.

Flowers and birds are always aware of the splendour of spring. Through flowers and birds, the beauty of time and space and the rhythm of life can be perceived within a square inch, which is unique to Chinese art. Wu Zaofa’s bird and flower jade carvings follow the tradition of keeping the pure and simple nature, and obtaining the true meaning of natural creation. He takes the birds, fish, flowers and trees that change endlessly and rotate in the four seasons as the source of inspiration, and takes the truth-seeking and specialized Huizhou culture as the core of his art. At the same time, he learns from the ancients and uses the knife as a brush to reproduce the unique interest and vitality of Song Dynasty’s flowers and birds with the magnificent colors on the jade pebbles. In the end, the beautiful Wuyuan mountains, simple and profound Huizhou culture, classical and elegant Song Dynasty’s flowers and birds, with the help of Shanghai Jade Carving skills, Wu Zaofa’s unique flower and bird jade carving style has been presented.

Appreciating Wu Zaofa’s jade carving art: it is either a bird flying between lotus ponds, or a crane standing proudly under the pines; or a dancing butterfly in search of fragrance, or a red carp striking the water. They are natural, so they are harmonious and simple; they are real, so they trigger people’s empathy. With the credo of “Natural and beautiful, truthful and vivid”, Wu Zaofa diligently seeks to carry on the centuries-old techniques of Shanghai School of Jade Carving, and to promote the new style of flower and bird jade carving.

On the occasion of flowers-blossoming Spring, Suzhou Museum, together with Mr. Wu Zaofa, has selected more than 60 pieces of his representative jade carvings, and sincerely invites the audience to join us in observing their shapes and colors, savoring the natural wildness of flowers and birds, enjoying the warmth and softness of beautiful jades, and appreciating the art of jade carving, which combines the creativity of the author and the beauty of natural life. Finally, I would like to thank Mr Wu Zaofa for his generous donation of the jade carving work “Crane Dancing in the Rising Sun”, which contributes to enriching the collection of our museum.
