Mahogany furniture is not only used in daily life, but also is infused with the owner’s spirits.
Since the Ming dynasty, Suzhou mahogany furniture had taken a leading role during a certain period of time and played a significant role in furniture of ancient times. Since the Qing dynasty, Suzhou-style furniture tended to be more refined, and the overall characteristics turned from simple and elegant, which is typical of Ming dynasty furniture, to graceful and luxurious. They imposed a dignified manner, with magnificent design. Usuallyvarious crafts were applied to one single piece of furniture, such as carving, inlaying and gold-painting, to manifest the features of its time.
At the same time, Ministry of Imperial Internal Affairs of the Qing dynasty produced large amount of Suzhou-style furniture. Sometimes they also asked Suzhou Weaving and Manufacturing Bureau to make the furniture. These furniture, which have become significant models for research on Suzhou-style furniture in the Qing dynasty, are now still kept in the Palace Museum.
After over one hundred years, a Suzhounese Mr. Gu Zhihao had the luck to take a look at these furniture closely. He selected eighteen pieces among thousands of furniture for appreciation once and again, in order to combine their distinctive characteristics with his own creations. On the basis of Suzhou-style furniture, his works also take in the gist of Beijing and Guangzhou furniture, which ultimately take on a dignified but not haughty, elegant but not dull manner.
Mr. Gu Zhihao’s insight and marvelous presentation of traditional furniture bring us back into the prosperousold times during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. His furniture reveal the superb skill of Suzhou craftsman and represent the essence of Suzhou-style furniture.
同时感谢顾志浩先生捐赠《红木三镶白玉如意》《南洋檀清明上河图长地屏》两件作品，为丰富我馆馆藏作出贡献。Meanwhile, we would like to express our sincere thanks for Mr. Gu Zhihao's generous donation of the White Jade-inlaid Mahogany Ruyiand Sandalwood Screen with “Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival”Motif, which makes contributions to the richness of our collection.
