妙造自然——于非闇绘画作品展

“我学习工笔花鸟画,是从1935年起始的。”这一年,于非闇四十六岁,正式转向工笔花鸟画的创作,最终以此闻名于世。

祖籍山东蓬莱的于氏,世居北京,于非闇母亲是满族人,他自幼接收中国传统教育。北京师范学校毕业后,任教于小学,并兼任《晨报》美编。像所有清末八旗子弟中的“玩家”一样,他闲暇时养蟋蟀、养蝈蝈,养菊花、养水仙,还豢养过一百多只鸽子。之后陆续将个人的经验、乐趣,写成了《都门豢鸽记》《都门艺兰记》《都门钓鱼记》等。这些闲情逸致,是他前半生的生活积累,谁曾想到会成为他后半生艺术的土壤。

于非闇专攻工笔花鸟画,源于张大千的建议,时在民国二十四年(1935)。同年,他们曾联袂在北平举办“张大千、方介堪、于非闇书画篆刻联展”。于非闇早年师从画师王润暄学画花鸟、草虫,并学习饲养昆虫及研制颜料之法。对于这些经历,他在《我怎样画工笔花鸟画》和《中国画颜色的研究》两书中,有详细的记录。他的绘画从明末的陈洪绶入手,对北宋徽宗赵佶的花鸟画最为推崇,且研究有素。加之他对写生对象的朝夕观察、深入体会,才使得自然界的生灵,在他笔下能够栩栩如生,更登堂入室,远承五代、宋元诸家法乳。所用纸墨、颜料,选择极精,效果至佳,与其鲜丽的画风相得益彰。其书法早年从晋唐楷帖入手,上溯秦汉篆隶,中年以后专攻虞、褚,晚年则以瘦金体著称,因此,可以说绘画、书法都遥接宋徽宗一脉。

自清代以来,传统文人画逐渐式微,至于晚清民国,海上画派异军突起。传统工笔花鸟画日趋衰落,之所以能够复起,于非闇兴微继绝之功,实不可没。1957年,北京画院成立,于非闇任副院长。两年后,因病去世,家藏古画与其生前创作精品数十幅被捐存画院。此次展出于非闇画作,均为北京画院藏品,特此致谢。

Preface

I started my painting of birds and flowers since 1935, Yu Feian was 46 years old, when he turned his specialty into elaborate and realistic painting of birds and flowers which finally made his reputation.

Originally coming from Penglai, Shandong, the Yu family settled down in Beijing for a long time. Yu Feian’s mother was Manchu, He studied in traditional Chinese educational way. After graduated from Beijing Normal School, Yu made his career in primary school and worked as the art editor of Morning Newspaper. Like other Eight Banners boys, Yu got enjoyment in playing crickets, Grasshopper, planting chrysanthemum narcissus and feeding over a hundred pigeons. Yu wrote down his experience and appreciations for his habit and later it became fertile soil for his art.

Yu Feian accepted suggestions from Zhang Daqian which made him focus on elaborate and realistic painting on birds and flowers. Yu held a cooperative exhibition of carving and painting with Zhang Daqian and Fang Jiekan in Peking, 1935. Yu Feian learned skills from Wang Runxuan in bird, flower, grass and insects. He was also addicted to raise insects and make pigments. He recorded all the details in his books. Yu originally did his research on painting from Chen Hongshou in the later Ming Dynasty and his favorites is Zhao Ji’s works, the Huizong Emperor of Song Dynasty on which Yu did the most research. His vivid painting was based on his observation and real experiences which also made his own style following the ancient artists in Song and Yuan Dynasty. Yu chose carefully on high quality paper and pigment, by which made his works more delicate and fresh. His calligraphy was also combined with ancient art style, from Qing and Han Dynasty to Tang Dynasty. Following Slender Gold of Huizong emperor of Song Dynasty proved his heritage.

The traditional scholar’s painting has declined since Qing Dynasty, and Shanghai Painting School earned its reputation in the later Qing Dynasty and Republic of China. The re-flourish of traditional elaborate and realistic painting on birds and flowers links to Yu Feian’s contribution of on inheritance. The Beijing Fine Art Academy was established and Yu became the deputy director in 1957. He passed away after two years and his collections and selected works were donated to the Academy. 于非闇先生是地地道道的老北京人,身上继承了京城特有的文化涵养,良好的家庭教育和故都的文化氛围,也孕育了他独特的个性和一专多能的才艺。最初于先生从事教育工作,同时还为数家报刊撰稿,是京津地区著名的记者。业余时间他养鸽豢鸟、种花莳草,博闻强识、性静情逸。中年以后于先生才开始专攻工笔花鸟,从明末的陈洪绶入手,遥接五代、宋元诸家,尤其对宋徽宗的艺术用功甚勤。在辅以栽花养鸟观察体味的基础上,他重拾古人的写生传统,注重体察万物的物理、物情和物态,此外还从民间艺术和缂丝工艺中汲取营养,最终形成了富丽堂皇、雍容大气的“于派”花鸟画新风。

1957年,刚刚成立的北京画院如同当时的新中国一样蓝图初成,百废待兴。于非闇先生担任建院之初的首任副院长。面对各种各样繁琐的艺术行政工作,年近七旬的于先生事无巨细,一切从头做起,为画院的艺术事业快速走上正轨并健康发展做出了重要贡献。1959年于先生因病去世之后,其家属以博大的胸怀将收藏的古画和于非闇生前创作的数十幅书画精品无偿捐献给国家,这批画作妥善地收藏在北京画院里,成为我们后人宝贵的精神财富。近年来,北京画院系统性地开展对于非闇艺术的研究与弘扬,早在2007年我们组织学术力量对院藏作品进行梳理研究,出版了《于非闇》画集,并同期举办“疏影留香——北京画院藏于非闇作品展”。2013年,我们与南京博物院合作举办“妙于陈馨——于非闇、陈之佛精品展”,集中呈现北京画院和南京博物院收藏的于非闇、陈之佛两位艺术大师的精品力作七十余幅,首次将画史上“南陈北于”的概念作对比性研究成果奉献给首都观众。2014年,我们与山西博物院合作“于非闇书画艺术展”,将北京画院藏于非闇书画作品悉数展出。

今年,是北京画院建院六十周年,我们在全国各地开展了多种形式的艺术展览和相关活动。此次与苏州博物馆共同联手,推出“妙造自然——于非闇绘画作品展”,是于非闇的艺术首次走进苏州,也将为北京画院六十周年院庆画上圆满的句号。苏州博物馆是首批国家一级博物馆,近年来取得的成绩斐然,“吴门画派”系列展更是每年冬季的文化盛事。衷心感谢苏州博物馆在此次展览策划及筹备方面做出的努力与辛勤工作,我们也期待与苏州博物馆有更多携手合作,共同将我们优秀的传统文化经典进行更为广泛的传承与发扬!

Preface

Mr. Yu Feian is a native of Beijing, inheriting the traditional culture of capital. Proper education and atmosphere of culture also raised his special character and abilities of being good at things but expert in certain area. Mr Yu started his career in education and wrote for several newspapers. He also was the famous journalist in Beijing and Tianjin. He raised pigeons and birds and planted flowers. He had wide knowledge with good memory and self-quietness. He focused on elaborated paintings of birds and flowers at middle age. Learning from Chen Hongshou in the late Ming Dynasty, Yu followed and combined art all over Five Period Dynasty, Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty. He spent plenty of time in studying the art of Huizong Emperor. He regained traditional way of paint from life, paid more attention on lives’ physics, principles and states. Yu also was inspired by folk art and tapestry and finally formed his own graceful and gorgeous style.

The Beijing Fine Art Academy was established in 1957, as young as New China things needed to be done. Mr. Yu Feian became the first deputy director of the Academy. He dealt with plenty of work carefully as an old man of age 70 and made great contribution on development and leading properly for the Academy. After his passing away in 1959, thanks to his family’s generosity, Academy received more than ten pieces of his work and a batch of his collections which became the mental treasure for generations. The Academy made systematical research and promotion on Yu Feian’s work in recent years. We organized research resourses to study collections of our own in 2007 and published catalogs and exhibitions. The Academy and Nanjing Museum held the exhibition on Yu Feian and Chen Zhifu with 70 works which showed the research on comparability between two masters. The exhibition between Academy and Shanxi Museum in 2014 exhibited all the collection from our own.

We will celebrate our 60th anniversary this year and we carried out plenty of art activities around China. The exhibition in Suzhou Museum of Yu Feian is the first time and will complete the anniversary perfectly. Suzhou Museum is one of the first team of National first class museum with huge achievements in recent years, especially the Wu School Painting is the great event of every winter. Please accept my deep appreciation to Suzhou Museum for your organization and preparation. We look so much forward to seeing more cooperation on inheriting and promoting our classical culture.
